Let me be real, finding a satisfyingly grippy yoga mat is like a getting a good haircut.

It makes you feel better and makes everything else just seem to flow.

Sure you can get by with a mat that is so thin your knees callous, attracts pet hair til it begins to look like the dog itself, and has the grip of a slip and slide…

But…

Why not just invest in yourself?

If you are setting aside your precious hard earned free time to practice, you deserve a the best quality yoga mat you can get.

With that I present to you, the most grippy yoga mat on Amazon curated list.

13 Grippy Yoga Mats

JADE Fusion Mat – Extra thick

Jade Fusion Yoga Mat Review

Thickness: 5/16” thick (almost 8mm)

Size: 74 inch by 24 inch as pictures here. (Other sizes may be available through the Jade website)

Materials: Natural Rubber

Grip Rating: 10/10

Natural rubber gives kick a$$ grip. For hot yoga or in super dry conditions, the micro texture is as sticky as gecko paws. This is my top pick for most grippy yoga mat, but there are others that come close, so stay tuned.

Review:

This Jade Yoga mat is made with pride in the USA. The Jade Fusion mat is one of the thickest yoga mats on this list, and the thickest Jade Yoga mat available today.

Reasonably long lasting, expect 5 years use at least.

The downside to this super grippy mat is it is a magnet for pet hair and random crumbs even if you have no pets and never eat Cheetos while practicing yoga.

In addition to superior grip, it has great traction. It’s made from natural rubber, so it makes sense, really. It might smell like a tire factory at first, but you can’t beat the grip.

…And the 74 inch size available here, I adore having the extra room!

Takeaway: Best Yoga Mat for Bad Knees

YOGA DESIGN LAB Eco Luxury Cork Yoga Mat

Yoga Design Lab Eco Luxury Cork Yoga Mat

Thickness: Available in 1.5mm, 3.5mm and 5.5 mm

Size: 70 by 24 inches

Materials: Cork and natural rubber

Grip Rating: 8/10

Best when wet. ;0) Great for hot yoga.

Review:

A cork yoga mat is ideal for hot yoga because cork performs better when its humid of wet, that is to say, it softens up and has better grip.

This mat is sturdy and easy to clean too. It will not attract pet hair and dust bunnies, so that’s a plus.

It is made in China, under socially responsible conditions. But I do not love the smell right out of the package. It is a bit rubbery.

But it more than makes up for the flaw, because the smell goes away, and the benefits of the mat stay.

The print on the mat does not wear or rub off, the mat is super light, (read: portable!) It stays put in class, has traction in other words. It has excellent grip in wet conditions.

You are going to love how light and flexible this mat is. Its great to take to your hot yoga class.

If you opt for the super thin 1.5mm mat, you will have yourself the best light yoga mat with grip to carry easily to class.

Takeaway: Best yoga mat for hot yoga

JADE Harmony Yoga Mat

Jade Harmony Yoga Mat Review

Thickness: 3/16” thick (nearly 5 mm)

Size: 74 inches by 24 inches

Materials: Natural rubber

Grip Rating: 10/10

Review:

Right off the bat, the Harmony yoga mat is a bit thinner than the Fusion yoga mat, so if you need more cushion het the Fusion.

This mat is however lighter and more flexible than the fusion, although the BOTH have the BEST grip for a yoga mat you can get.

Harmony’s thinness makes it ideal for balance poses, inversions, headstands and the like.

It smells like a Goodyear tire factory out of the box but the smell eventually dissipates. It is rubber, so….

The pros are definitely its high density, its sticky/grabby surface and its eco-friendly manufacture and material.

I don’t know of any other mats that have the texture or density of this one.

However, it does collect lint and pet hair. Bummer.

The longevity is just OK, it will last a few years, or several hundred hours of practice, but it is superior to all others in terms of grip and traction, and is made from natural material, while still being eco-friendly.

Takeaway: Yoga mat with the most grip and traction

Cork Space Cork Yoga Mats

Cork Space Yoga Mat Review

Thickness: Varies

Size: varies

Materials: Portuguese Cork and natural rubber

Grip Rating: 8/10

Review:

Cork space is a small family business based in Europe, where these beautiful cork mats ship from.

These cork mats are made from sustainably sourced cork and natural rubber. They are soft and flexible and light weight.

Cork is a great material for yoga mats, especially in damp or humid environments. It gets grippier when wet, and is naturally anti-bacterial. Plus, if you do not like the idea of overuse of non-biodegradable plastics, this is a natural, (eventually) biodegradable option.

Cork and natural rubber do not last as long as synthetic plastics, but they more than make up for that because they are fully bio-degradable after a lifetime of use.

Takeaway: Most sustainable, eco-friendly cork mat

Manduka PRO Mat

Manduka PRO Yoga Mat Review

Thickness: 6mm

Size: 71 by 26 inches

Materials: Polyvinyl (PVC)

Grip Rating: 7/10

It’s not a sticky mat, per se, but it does have grip. It has a subtle texture for grip. It has grip in both dry and wet conditions, and leaving it in the sun after a sea salt scrub can improve the grip greatly.

Review:

Manduka yoga mats are made with precision craftsmanship in an eco-friendly, emissions free facility in Germany.

This tough, heavy duty mat has dense foam that feels firm and provides stable grounding for the most demanding poses.

I really love the size of this mat, it’s a few inches larger than standard and I like the extra space to move around on.

One thing to note, this mat is heavy, over 6 pounds, and that is due to the size, and the density of the foam. It’s a quality yoga mat, and one of the best yoga mats on this list, but it’s probably not an ideal portable yoga mat if you want to travel light.

I want to also mention, these mats are long lasting, like expect a decade of use or more from one of these beauties. Plus, they actually get better (more grippy and pliable) with age.

Takeaway: BEST yoga mat on amazon

Yogi Bare Paws Yoga Mat

Yogi Bear Paws Eco Yoga Mat Review

Thickness: 4mm

Size: 71 by 26 inches

Materials: Eco Natural Rubber with Polyurethane top

Grip Rating: 9/10

This mat has great grip wet or dry. It’s a little stretch of soft surfaces life carpet, but the rubber has great traction.

Review:

The Yogi Bare yoga mat is a little wider than other standard size yoga mats, which I like.

It’s made from a closed cell rubber with a polyurethane top. The closed cell nature of rubber make it naturally resistant to funk.

Even though this yoga mat does incorporate a type of plastic, polyurethane, this type of plastic is better than PVC. PU Not only has a great suede like (yet vegan) feel, polyurethane is superior to PVC because PU has less chemicals used to make it so it is a greener material.

This mat is lightweight and thin. I like it for inversions, but if you like more cushion, it may be too thin. It’s really a matter of preference, but I do not feel as stable on thicker mats.

This yoga mat is not cheap, but it is usually significantly less expensive than the top known brands like lululemon, Manduka and Jade.

Takeaway: Superior quality grip, at half the price of the name brand mats.

Clever Extra Long 7′ Premium Yoga Mat

Clever Yoga Mat Review

Thickness: 4.5mm

Size: 84.2 inches by 26.8 inches

Materials: Polyurethane, Rubber

Grip Rating: 9/10

Review:

This grippy yoga mat is made with a natural rubber layer with a eco-friendly polyurethane cover bonded together using heat so It’s vegan friendly.

I love the velvety suede like feeling of its surface, it gives me traction and feels soft and inviting at the same time.

This yoga mat is PERFECT for tall Yogis. It is one of the ONLY yoga mats that is this long. Its 7 feet long!

If you are tall, there is room to lay on the mat without dangling of or feeling self-conscious in class about going off mat. It literally gives you the room to be you!

Since this mat is made of rubber it smells at first, but that goes away and that rubber keeps the mat in place.

Takeaway: Large Yoga mat with excellent grip. Best yoga mat for tall people.

LuluLemon Yoga Mat

Lulu Lemon Arise Yoga Mat Review

Thickness: Varies

Size: Varies

Materials: Rubber and Polyurethane

Grip Rating: 9/10

Review:

Lululemon is one of the most well-known among yogis and you have probably seen these high quality mats in your yoga class.

They have an eco-friendly rubber base for traction and a soft polyurethane cover with plenty of grip.

Lululemon knows what they are doing when it comes to yoga, and you can not go wrong choosing this brand.

The only thing that would cause me to choose a different mat is that these are not made in the US. If you want a yoga mat made in the USA, go with a Jade yoga mat.

Takeaway: Best yoga mat for beginners

Hugger Mugger Gallery Collection Mat

Hugger Mugger Yoga Mat Review

Thickness: 1/8th inch or a bit more than 3mm (according to Hugger mugger website, ULTRA mats are ¼” thick but regular gallery collection are 1/8” inch thick)

Size: 68 inches by 24 inches

Materials: PER (Polymer Environmental Resin)

Grip Rating: 7/10 Its not the most grippy yoga mat, but it gets the job doe. It is one of the best yoga mats on Amazon in the budget price range, so theres that.

Review:

The hugger Mugger mat is a super affordable, yet high quality yoga mat made that is dense and decently cushioned (but a little thin), while still being light enough to travel because it’s just 2.4 lbs.

My favorite part is the design, the moon print. I just really dig it.

Since this mat is made from PER, which is not petrol based and sustainable, it is not as long lasting as PVC mats, but its affordable and eco-friendly, so there is a fair tradeoff IMO.

As far as grip…

It’s just right in the sticky department for yoga class. Not so sticky your shirt always catches on it, but grippy enough you feel secure during poses.

Takeaway: Perfect yoga mat for the casual yogi or occasional travel

B YOGA Strong 6mm Yoga Mat

B mat STRONG yoga mat review

Thickness: ¼ inch thick 6mm

Size: 71 inches by 26 inches

Materials: Rubber

Grip Rating: 10/10

Review:

You can use this 100% natural rubber yoga mat while dripping with sweat and it will STILL have grip.

It will not slip in hot yoga and is a great mat if you sweat a lot.

It is super sticky so the grip is unquestionable, however it is so sticky that it may catch your clothes. When I am doing sliding poses and movements it sometimes catches my hem and pulls my shirt up. Ooops.

This mat is dense and thick, so it is pretty heavy. The tradeoff is it is also good for the knees and cushions good, which I also like.

Takeaway: Super cushy dense mat that WILL NOT SLIP in hot yoga.

Gaiam SOL Premium Mat Dry-Grip Non Slip

Gaiam SOL Premuim Yoga Mat Review

Thickness: 5mm

Size: 60” inches by 24 inches

Materials: Polyvinyl Chloride

Grip Rating: 9/10

This is a grippy yoga mat and sticky with or without moisture, and its grip is a favorite feature among yogis. If cleaned improperly it may lose that grip with time.

Review:

This Gaiam Sol yoga mat is easy on the pocketbook and a pleasure to use.

It is rather heavy, so it might not be as travel friendly as others, and some may not like that it’s made from Polyvinyl Chloride, but it more than makes up for that by the grip it offers and the price point.

It is great for Hot Yoga and maintains its stick, even after you sweat buckets.

The mat stays fixed to the floor and will not slip, so you feel secure and it actually makes it easier to balance.

The reason this mat is heavy is because the foam is so dense. Its got great cushion, without feeling unstable. For the price, this mat gets my vote for best yoga mat on Amazon.

Takeaway: Ideal yoga mat for a small budget

Manduka eKO Yoga Mat

Manduka eKO Yoga Mat Review

Thickness: 5mm

Size: 71” inches by 24” inches

Materials: Non-amazon sourced runner

Grip Rating: 10/10 Manduka will not fail you, its one of the most grippy yoga mats on this list.

The ripples surface texture paired with the natural rubber material it’s made from give this yoga mat the grippiest grip a yoga mat can offer.

Review:

Here is what I LOVE about the eKO:

It is the most Gaia friendly yoga mat available today, without sacrificing any grip or performance.

The rippled surface texture offers superior ride traction and rubber naturally sticks well to hard floor surfaces.

It’s totally biodegradable, uses nontoxic dye and processes the rubber without harmful chemicals.

Manduka really put a lot of though and care into making this mat and they deserve some love!

Takeaway: Most Natural, sustainable, Gaia conscious yoga mat

B Yoga Natural Non Slip Cork 4mm B Mat

B Mat Cork Yoga Mat Review

Thickness: 4mm

Size: 72” inches by 24” inches

Materials: Cork and rubber

Grip Rating: 8/10

Cork gets grippier when wet, but still has decent grip when dry. IMO, Its one of the best hot yoga mats for grip because I love cork mats.

Review:

Cork yoga mats are perfect for people who sweat a lot, myself included, and those who do hot yoga, which I actually do not.

This cork yoga mat by B mat gets better with use. In other words it becomes more grippy and softer.

I love that this mat lays perfectly flat, because some all rubber mats can curl a bit at the corner, but not this cork yoga mat.

I also prefer the smell and natural feel of cork on my paws and tootsies. It just feels more grounded, somehow.

Yoga Mat FAQs

  1. How Can I keep my Yoga mat free from lint and pet hair?

Yoga mat covered in pet hair

    Let’s be real.
Some yoga mats attract pet hair, lint and other crap like nobody’s business.
    It can be annoying.

    So…

How do we deal with this?
    There are a few options:

    * All natural Anti-Static Spritz that’s right. The same stuff you use to get rid of static on your clothes can help keep pet hair off your mat. Except this one is made from just deionized water, essential oils and fragrance.

Deionized water works because it is stripped of minerals and cannot conduct electricity. Without static electricity, pet hair and particles will not be magnetically attracted to your mat.

    * Lint Roller It works to remove the undesirable debris, but they get used up quick and are not cheap nor eco-friendly.

  2. How Thick should my Yoga mat be?

    yoga mat thickness variation

There is a happy medium, in yoga mat land.

    The thin yoga mat option:

A thin yoga mat is 4mm or less, IMO.

If your yoga mat is too thin or the foam is not too dense it hurts your knees and other parts that come into contact with the mat. Thin mats generally do not provide a lot of cushion and comfort. They do however have their benefits, so keep reading.

Thin mats are lighter and travel well, so if you take it to class everyday, you may want one.

Thin yoga mats are also more stable, so challenging poses become easier.

    The Thick Yoga mat option:

A thick yoga mat is 5mm or thicker.

A thick yoga mat ideally provides the knees more cushion. As someone who is always discovering new bruises on my knees, I appreciate that.

A good thick yoga mat is made from dense foam, so it will not compress too easily. You want that. It keeps the yoga mat stable and they last longer. Cheaply made yoga mats may be over 5mm, but they easily sink under your knees and hurt anyways.

Thicker mats are heavier, usually double the weight of the thinner counterparts. A thicker mat may also make it harder to balance and get into inversion poses like handstands and headstands because you move more.

  3. How do you take care of your Yoga Mat so its lasts and keeps its Grip?

    yoga mat cleaner

    I get it!

You invested in this yoga mat and you want it to last.

The best way to get the most studio hours out of your yoga mat is to take good care of it.

Get a good yoga mat cleaner like Manduka Yoga Mat Wash and Refresh or Yoga with Adriane DIY Mat cleaning Spray and clean it after each use.

Don’t want to buy a yoga mat cleaner?

You can make your own yoga mat cleaner using water (preferably deionized) and essential oil. You can also check out this recipe for a DIY yoga mat spray. REI DIY Yoga Mat Cleaner Recipe

What I do not recommend is putting it in the washing machine which might wear or possibly tear or ruin it, or using harsh chemical filled cleaners that can break down the material. It’s just not worth the risk.
