Welcome to my Luna Tattoo Concert Ukulele review and unboxing. If you would like to see the video version I made of this review, click here.
If you are wondering “Are Luna ukuleles good?” you are in the right place. I think they are and I am here to tell you why.
I purchased this tattoo ukulele in September of 2022 so I have had some time to play with it. This is my honest opinion.
This Luna Tattoo ukulele review includes the unboxing, up close pictures and details, and my honest assessment, so you don’t want to miss it.
This is my first ukulele, and I love it! I was not paid for this review, nor was i given this uke, I just really wanted a beginner ukulele and chose this one. I paid for this ukulele myself.
What are the key features of the Luna Tattoo Concert Ukulele?
The Luna Tattoo Concert Ukulele features a mahogany body, a rosewood fingerboard, and a laser-etched tattoo design. With a concert size that offers a balance between portability and rich sound, it’s perfect for both beginners and experienced ukulele players looking for quality and style.
Luna Tattoo Uke Review
This ukulele came in this Luna ukulele box, which is shaped like a ukulele. No surprises there. The box has the Luna Guitar motto, “take your pick, make your mark”. It came well packaged, I got it off Amazon for about a Benjamin, as of Sept 2022.
It is wrapped in foam wrap and its gig bag which adds some protection.
Luna Tattoo Concert Ukulele Gig Bag
The Gig bag has handles and zippered bag. Pretty handy. I keep my sheet music tucked in there.
The gig bag is zippered and has straps you can wear like a backpack. Like this.
Accessories & Extras Included with the Ukulele
Aside from the gig bag, this uke did not include many extras. It was missing some things I needed, such as a uke strap and a strap peg, which I had to purchase separately.
For starters, this ukulele came with high quality Aquila Super Nylgut strings preinstalled.
I searched for a while for a uke strap and finally decided on this super cute cat patterned ukulele strap.
I also had to buy, and install, a strap peg for my uke so I could put the strap on.
Luna Concert Tattoo Uke size, scale and length
This is a concert size ukulele. It has a 15 inch scale which is the distance between the nut and the fret.
It has a 23 inch overall length. It is a concert size ukulele.
As an average size adult woman, I really like the concert size and feel like its a good fit. The fret board Is plenty wide enough for my fingers.
Just so you know, there are smaller ukuleles than concert. Sopranos are smaller than a concert ukulele, and tenors are larger than a concert ukulele. I personally find the soprano too small, and the concert size is just the right fit.
Luna Concert Tattoo Ukulele Action
The action of this ukulele is a bit on the low side, which certainly makes it more comfortable for my fingers, but I have to train my fingers to go on their tips, which has been a challenge for me.
However, with the mahogany neck and walnut fingerboard, the Luna Tattoo Concert Ukulele offers stellar playability and response, making it great for exploring new and interesting uke chord patterns up and down the neck.
I still love this uke, and I could take it to a music store to have the action adjusted if I wanted it higher.
The action on a ukulele is the distance between the strings and the fret board. If the action is high, its easier to play, too low and the strings may sound buzzy. However, lower strings are a little more comfortable for bare fingertips in my opinion.
Luna Tattoo Uke Gear Tuners
I love the two toned gear tuners on this uke. They are better than friction tuners that use resistance between the peg and the instrument.
Gear tuners use a gear system and allow you to fine tune to the perfect note.
This uke has a tuning of gCEA. Even the smallest turn on the gear tuner is all it takes to achieve the right note. I use the Kala app to tune my ukulele. I am not a big fan of the other stuff on that app, but the tuner on the Kala app is PERFECT for ukuleles.
Luna Concert Tattoo Ukulele Design and Aesthetics
I really dig the sun carving around the rosette of the sound hole.
The tattoo pattern on this ukulele represents waves, the sun, sea birds and other traditional Hawaiian elements and includes several spirals.
It is reminiscent of traditional Hawaiian body art or Hawaiian body ornamentation.
The pearl inlay on the frets is triangle shape and designed to match the pattern on the sound board and sound hole, so they match the tattoo carving. It’s a very unique fret look.
The finish of this ukulele is more like a satin or matte even. It is certainly not glossy. The mahogany wood is simply stunning. I love the color.
Super Nylgut strings on the Luna tattoo concert Ukulele
The frets this ukulele are smooth and comfortable to play. I also like the strings, although I may upgrade to D’Addario Fluorocarbon strings in the future for a crisper sound. But the Aquila Supernylgut strings it comes with are soft and provide a traditional ukulele sound.
Tone and Sound Quality of this Tattoo Uke
the Luna Tattoo Mahogany Ukulele provides a decent sound quality with a warm, rich tone typical of mahogany instruments.
Sometimes cheap ukuleles are weak when it comes to the treble sound. This Luna Uke does not suffer the same issue, it is great in the treble range.
It also sounds great on the bass end of the range, with a rich, resonant sound.
This luna ukulele has plenty of volume and the sustain is good, but not over the top.
Luna Concert Tattoo Ukulele Build Quality and Details
I love that it is made from mahogany wood, the sound is amazing. The soundboard, sides and back of this uke are mahogany.
And the craftsmanship is very nice. The binding or seams of the wood edges are smooth.
Additionally, the neck is securely attached and there are no rough edges that I found. The frets are rounded and pretty smooth, I find they are comfortable for my bare fingers. (I do not use a pick).
The quality features such as using gear tuners, Aquila strings, including a gig bag, having a carved design instead of a print, and being all mahogany wood point to a quality instrument I am very pleased to have and play.
Price of the Luna Concert Tattoo Ukulele
I paid a little over 100 dollars for this uke in September of 2022, and for the price, it was worth every penny. I am OVER THE MOON for my Luna uke.
Are Luna Tattoo Beginner Mahogany Ukuleles good?
The Luna Tattoo Beginner Mahogany Ukulele is a good choice for beginners due to its combination of aesthetics, build quality, playability, and price. It’s an accessible option for those just starting out, offering a good balance of features without requiring a significant investment.
My favorite aspects are the warm tone it has, the artistic tattoo design, and its playability, with low action I find its more comfortable for my newbie fingers to adjust to.
Where are Luna Ukuleles Made?
Luna tattoo concert ukuleles are designed in the UK and US, and built according to stringent specs in Korea or China.
