Hello fellow travelers! Welcome to the Uncle Ben’s Tek Shopping List.
The Uncle Ben’s Tek is THE easiest mushroom growing tech I have ever seen. Uncle Ben’s Tech can be used to grow all kinds of mushrooms, from gourmet, medicinal, common grocery store button mushrooms and especially the enchanted interstellar traveler type mushrooms, aka Psilocybin Cubensis mushrooms (if they are legal to grow where you live, of course).
But…
As I read through the steps to start my own mushroom growing journey, I saw the need for a concise online shopping list for EACH part of the process, so I created one.
NOTE: This Uncle Ben’s Tek Shopping List assumes enough material for 10 Uncle ben’s bags which can be inoculated using one spore syringe. You can adjust the quantities as you see fit.
If you want to see the shopping list divided in 4 parts, simply continue reading.
Part one of Uncle Bens Tek deep dives into how mushrooms grow, their life cycle, ETC. I HIGHLY recommend reading part one. There is technically nothing you need to purchase for part 1, so there is no shopping list.

Nothing to buy for part one, this sections is for learning and gives you a solid background. Don’t skip reading it!
INNOCULATION. Part 2 of the Uncle Ben’s Tek is all about inoculating and colonizing the Rice Bags. Preventing contamination by disinfecting and meticulous sanitation practices, and getting the right inoculation temperature are the name of the game.

10cc multi spore syringe for the Mushroom of your Choice 1 syringe inoculates 10 bags of rice
10 bags of Uncle Ben’s PLAIN Brown Ready Rice ONLY plain, brown, ready rice, max 30 mg sodium
70% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol Do NOT get 90% or more, 70% is best for penetrating bacteria
Nitrile Gloves Latex and powder free. Gloves are needed for Step 2 and step 3.
Paper Towels Sterile sanitary way to disinfect the area, to use with the alcohol
KN 95 Face Mask Keeps your germs from contaminating the workspace and your grow
Micropore tape a MUST, allows Oxygen and Co2 in and keeps contam OUT of your grow
Still Air Box Recommended but optional. Prevents Contamination.
Lysol Disinfects the air to prevent contamination
Scissors To cut shit, like the corners off the rice bags. Also used in Part 3 and 4.
Chip Clips/Bag Clips OPTIONAL to seal bags & prevent contam as you clip & tape corners
Lighter To sterilize the spore syringe needle
Indoor Air Temp thermometer Optional but Useful. Keep inoculation temps between 75° – 80°
Temperature Controller OPTIONAL But useful if temps fluctuate or you are using a heater
Small space heater ONLY needed if your space doesn’t reach a consistent 75° – 80°.

Part 3 is all about spawning to bulk and Fruiting. In this stage you prepare the substrate for your mushrooms and make the conditions ideal so the substrate produces fruit (aka mushrooms). This stage uses clear plastic tubs, kept at an even, specific temperature and humidity, with just the right evaporation and fresh air exchange. Getting this right takes the right stuff and the tools you need are listed below.

Clear Plastic 6 Quart Bins w Lids You need 1 tub for 1 to 2 bags of Uncle Ben’s Spawn
Substrate Coco Coir UBT Author used pure coco coir
5-Gallon Plastic Bucket with Lid A clean home depot bucket and lid work fine too
Ultra-Fine Water Mister Essential for maintaining proper humidity. DON’T use a sprayer!
LED Strip Lights OPTIONAL; Light tells mushrooms which direction to grow. Window works too.
Timer for the lights OPTIONAL
2 Gallons of distilled Water: Optional only if your tap water is crap quality
Indoor Air Temp thermometer Optional but Useful. Keep Spawning temps between 72° – 76°
Part 4 of the Uncle Bens Tech is harvesting, drying and preparing for your NEXT flush. Mushrooms begin to rot soon after being picked, so dehydrating them is critical. With proper care you cake can produce flushes for up to 1 month.
Curved Fly tying scissors Used to carefully and precisely cut the mushroom level with the cake
2 Gallons of distilled Water: Optional. Use if your tap water is crap quality
Compact Dehydrator Dehydrate mushrooms at 130F overnight for long lasting crisp shrooms.
Silica packets Optional if you use a dehydrator, but good preservative insurance
Window Screen Mesh Optional. To prevent small pins from falling through the tray
Airtight Glass Canisters store dehydrated mushrooms for years without losing potency

Great question. Just ONE spore syringe can inoculate 10 bags of Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice. A standard spore syringe is 10 ml, and each bag needs just one ml of spore solution to inoculate the whole bag.
That depends. If you use one spore syringe, that will inoculate 10 bags. If all 10 begs are successfully inoculated, you can use one bag of rice in each bin, so a max of 10 bins is needed for one syringe.
But…
Some folks use 2 bags of inoculated ready rice for each bin. Also consider that some bags may not inoculate properly or may have contamination, so you may need fewer bins. The most you should need for each syringe is 10 clear plastic bins.
You can use any brand of ready-style rice, as long as it is plain, unflavored brown or white rice with a max of 30 mg of sodium per bag. If you live in the United States, Safeway makes a good knockoff brand of ready rice that is just as good.
YES! A sprayer will not work. Getting the humidity perfect is key to getting your mushrooms to fruit. Too dry, they won’t grow, too wet, they rot. A sprayer leaves pools of water that encourage rot. A mister gives an ultrafine even mist which is exactly what you need for the perfect flush.
If your grow space is cold or does not consistently get to 75-80 degrees, you will need a space heater to warm that shit up. Mushrooms need just the right conditions to spawn and produce fruit, and they need to be at 75-80 degrees to inoculate the bag, and a little colder at 72 to 76 degrees to spawn and grow those little mushies. So a space heater may be a wise investment, along with an indoor thermometer.

I also recently did a COMPLETE write up of the easiest magic mushroom tek I have heard of. Did you know you can grow Psilocybin mushrooms DIRECTLY inside a 90 second ready rice bag?
That’s it! I hope you found this Uncle Ben’s Tek Shopping List helpful for growing your own batch of goodness.
