Material: Bell Metal (a type of bronze)

Review :

This singing bowl is not actually too big considering its only got a 5.5” inch diameter. The reason I included it on my list of large Tibetan singing bowls is because, for its diameter, the walls are quite high, and the bowl is quite heavy. Its a big singing bowl in its own way.

5.5” inches is not exactly small either. 5.5 inches is medium, IMO.

The high walls and heft give this deep belly, rin gong style singing bowl a resonant, profound roar when struck that I find satisfying. I love it for meditation too, because the sound lasts.

Large Singing Bowl FAQs

  1. How do I sing a large metal singing bowl?

I have had a few of my readers ask me, “Is it harder to play a large Tibetan singing bowl?¨

Of course its easy to strike a large singing bowl, and what a breathtaking, thunderous roar they make when you do so.

    But….

It can be more challenging to sing a large Tibetan singing bowl than their smaller counterparts.

Try these tips to sing your large Tibetan singing bowl:

    playing large singing bowl

Place your hand inside the singing bowl. This evens out the vibration and stabilizes the bowl so you can achieve a smoother even hum.

You do not necessarily need to rub the mallet all the way around the rim to build up enough singing vibration.

See how the person in this video rubs the mallet back and forth across only one section of the edge to develop enough reverberation to cause the oversized singing bowl to sing.

  2. What is tin? Why is tin included in Tibetan singing bowls?

Tin is a soft silvery colored metal that is included in Bronze. Tin has a crystalline like structure and is very pliant.

Many singing bowls are made with a special type of Bronze called bell metal, which is a mix of copper and tin, although it can include other metals.

Singing bowls may have very small amounts of other metal, some even claim to have gold and silver although this is hard to verify.

Copper and tin, or bell metal, has distinct properties not found in the metals separately. The combination produces metal that is harder than tin or copper separately, and has excellent reverberation leading to resounding gong like sound when struck.

Combining copper and tin also makes the bowl longer wearing and the bowl naturally, over time, creates a patina that protects it from oxidation.

  3. What is the difference between a large brass singing bowl and a bronze singing bowl?

    Brass vs Bronze Singing Bowl

While Bronze is a mix of Copper and tin, Brass is a mix of copper and zinc.

To be sure, they share some similar properties and both create excellent bells, gongs and singing bowls.

    But what’s the difference?

As far as singing bowls go, this answer is rather anti-climactic.

Brass is more malleable, and bronze is more pliable.

What does that even mean? OK, in terms of metal, malleable means it is easier to hammer, beat and extend.

Pliable, in metal, means its is soft, flexible, easily bent.

Brass has a more gold like color and a prettier shine, IMO. Bronze is a bit darker gold tone metal.

Bronze is a harder metal and can not be machined as easily, so bronze bowls are almost always sand cast and hand hammered.

As far as sound goes, the sound quality between a brass and bronze singing bowl is hard to differentiate. Brass is brighter, almost lighter sound, and bronze has a more profound sound.

The closest I could find is this YouTube video. Its not singing bowls in the video, but instead compares two of the same model saxaphone, only one is brass and one is bronze. The difference is subtle. Really subtle.

Interesting to note: True authentic antique (really hard to find and expensive) singing bowls are made from bronze. None of the bowls in this list are antiques. I am not an antique expert and would never pretend to be, but be aware there are some out there who try to pass off modern bowls as antiques.

  4. Does a Tibetan singing bowl have a particular note?

    notes
    Yes and no.

Yes they all have many notes, and no, they are usually not tuned to a particular note.

Most singing bowls are not tuned to a particular note because it is not only challenging to do so, but each bowl is capable of producing several notes depending on how it is struck or sung.

Singing the bowl around the rim with the leather side of the mallet may produce a note in the middle of the bowls range, while using the hard side of a wood mallet may produce a higher tone, and using a soft mallet to strike the bowl makes a lower tone.

That makes sense when you think about it. The sound of the singing bowl depends, in part, on the frequency it vibrates at. A soft mallet strike vibrates slower and produces a lower tone.

Of course size also matters, of course, and that affects vibration rate and sound as well.

I hope you enjoyed perusing this list of large Tibetan singing bowls and find just the right one for your practice.
