Are you ready to Grow Mushrooms DIRECTLY in a Ready Rice Bag?

This write up goes step by step to show you how to fruit psilocybin mushrooms directly inside an inoculated bag of Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice.

Save time and hassle and fruit mushrooms from the bag! While this method may not grow as many mushrooms as growing psilocybin mushrooms in bins, it is cheap, simple, hassle free and easy. TRUE lazy man’s route to growing magic mushrooms with as little effort as possible.

All you need are a few KEY items, which I summarize in a handy shopping list.

Follow this Guide to growing magic mushrooms inside the ready rice bag and you will be flying in no time.

growing mushrooms inside rice bag

Step 1: Get your S#!t together, man.

1st, you need stuff. Here is a handy list of the stuff you need for fruiting mushrooms directly from the 90 Second Rice Bags.

Stuff can be found at the grocery store, pharmacy and online. Spore syringes can usually only be found online and reddit has a decent list of vendors.

Handy Shopping list for this fun grow project (PRINTABLE):

Once you have your S#!t together, you are ready for step 2.

Step 2: Inoculate the ready rice bags.

I remember back in the day, when I was a kid, parents wanted their kids to get chicken pox while they were young, because it’s less dangerous.

So….

When some kid in the neighborhood had chicken pox, the parents would get the kids together for a sleepover with the idea of infecting all the kids with chickenpox.

That is kinda like what inoculating is. Your spore syringe is like the kid with chicken pox. The Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice is like your child who has never had chicken pox. And YOU are the parent throwing this party together.

2a. Wipe everything down

2a. Wipe everything down

Use 70% isopropyl alcohol and clean paper towels to sanitize everything.

If you can do this inside a still air box, great.

If not, you risk contamination, but it can still be done. Work in a clean area, work quickly, and be sure pets and others are not around. No fans or AC, or anything that blows the air around either.

Wipe all instruments, work surface, the front of the uncle bens ready rice bag, etc. Make sure you have you mask and gloves on and that your hands are washed.

Spray the air liberally with Lysol and wait for that to settle.

2b. Spore Syringe

2b. Spore Syringe

Use your torch lighter and heat the needle of the syringe until it is glowing red. Allow the needle to cool completely. NOTE. If using a still air box, do NOT use a flame inside the box, it could light alcohol fumes. Sterilize the needle outside the box.

2c. Inoculating the bag and creating the gas exchange vent

2c. Inoculating the bag and creating the gas exchange vent

First, make sure you wipe the front of the bag clean with alcohol and a paper towel.

Now, use the spore syringe needle and carefully puncture the bag near the top. Inject about .75 cc/ml of the solution in the bag.

Some sources say to use 1cc, or 1ml of solution, but uncle bens bags tend to be on the “wet” side and too much liquid can increase the chance of rot. .75 ml gets the job done, and inoculates two extra bags (12 total).

Make a few small holes at the top of the bag with the spore syringe needle as you are inoculating the bag. Just wiggle the needle a bit to enlarge the hole and cover with micro pore tape after you inject .75cc/ml of spore syringe solution.

Cover the needle holes with micro pore tape immediately after injection. Rinse and repeat for all 12 bags.

Step 3: Colonization of your ready rice bags

3a. Put bags away and keep warm

Place bags on a shelf in a damp warm location away from contamination sources like the bathroom or kitchen.

Use an indoor thermometer to keep temps between 75° and 80° degrees Fahrenheit for fastest colonization rates. Too hot and mycelium won’t grow fast, but bacteria and contamination will. Too cold and your mycelium will take forever to colonize.

indoor thermometer

3b. Squish and Mix: Break up Mycelium once 20 to 30% colonized

Check the clear window at the bottom of your uncle bens rice bag. Once it’s about 20 to 30% colonized, shake and break up the rice by squishing and mixing. Note: Mycelium may bruise and turn blue. It’s all good.

colonization

3c. Form Rice so it’s FLAT on top.

Growing psilocybin mushrooms inside the rice bag is easy, but like any work of art it should be done with some thought and care.

Remember that we are fruiting mushrooms directly from the 90 Second Rice Bags, so the mushrooms will grow from the TOP of the bag.

Therefore, make sure that you form the rice so the top is flat, pushing the partially colonized rice towards the bottom of the bag and flattening the top with your fingers. This way you have the most growing/surface area as possible.

3c. Form Rice so it’s FLAT on top

3d. Wait for Full Colonization

3d. Wait for Full Colonization

In a few weeks, the bags should be fully colonized. Once you have full colonization, you can move on to fruiting to grow mushrooms in a rice bag.

Step 4: Fruit from the rice bag

4a. Open rice bags and rehydrate overnight

Cut the top off the rice bag.

Wipe the sides with a clean paper towel to remove any residue and rice grains that are not colonized.

Open a NEW gallon of distilled water and fill bag with the clean distilled water. Be careful to fill only up to your gas exchange holes, or the water will leak from those holes.

Let sit overnight.

Dump out water and move on to next step.

4b. Sterilize Coco Coir and place on substrate

Fill a glass bowl with some pre shredded, loose coco coir and pour in some water and mix it up. Microwave for 5 minutes.

Allow to cool completely.

Break up the very top layer of mycelium from your rice bag.

Open rice bags and rehydrate overnight

Take a handful of coco coir and give it a squeeze until hardly any water drops squeeze out.

Place the handful of coco coir over that top layer of Mycelium you broke up. Pack coir loosely over the mycelium in the bag.

Open rice bags and rehydrate overnight 2

4c. Paperclip center of bag

4c. Paperclip center of bag

Paperclip the bag closed at the top. Leave the outside edges open. At this point the bag needs fresh air so leave the sides open.

Just barely snip the corners off a ziplock bag to create two very small vents.

Place the ziplock bag over the top, to retain moisture and place on a shelf in your fruiting area. A plastic grocery bag with a few small holes works too, if you do not have ziplock bags handy.

4c. Paperclip center of bag 2

4d. Drop temperature in your fruiting space or area

Drop temperature to between 69° and 74° F in your fruiting space to provide proper growing conditions to start growing magic mushrooms in an Uncle Bens ready rice bag.

Use an indoor thermometer because Psilocybin mushrooms need this specific temperature range to start pinning and fruiting.

Water evaporation and a drop in temperature are what trigger pinning and growth!

4e. Mist once or twice a day with ultra-fine mister

The mycelium know it’s time to start pinning and fruit mushrooms in your rice bag when the temperature is between 69° and 74° F and water is evaporating from the surface of your 100% colonized uncle bens rice bag.

So…

Mist your mushrooms using distilled water. Use an ultra fine mist sprayer, NOT a spray bottle. You want a fine mist so you do not get large droplets that can create mold and contamination.

You want to use distilled water because minerals in regular water can gum up the ultra-fine mister.

Lightly mist from about 12 inches above the bag once or twice a day.

4f. Wait a few weeks to Grow Mushrooms DIRECTLY in a Ready Rice Bag

After a week or two of keeping the temp controlled between 69° and 74° F and using the ultra fine mist sprayer once or twice a day to keep fruiting conditions optimal, you should see the coco coir colonize and start pinning. The pins grow into shrooms right in your ready rice bag.

NOW it’s the moment you have been waiting for. Time to harvest!

See the next step, step 5, to learn how to harvest, dry and store your precious booty.

Step 5: Harvest, Dry and Store your psilocybin mushrooms

5a. Harvest mushrooms before the veil opens

5a. Harvest mushrooms before the veil opens

Harvest your psilocybin mushrooms right before the veil opens or right as the veil opens, before the spores drop, for max potency.

Note: spores are harmless to eat, but they blemish the mushroom and the mushroom stops producing psilocybin once the veil is broken.

If you do not have scissors, you can twist and rip the mushrooms from the substrate.

But…

I prefer to snip the mushroom right at the base using Curved Fly tying scissors where the mushroom meets the substrate. It is MUCH cleaner and prettier. To each his own I guess.

5b. Dry your magic Mushrooms

Mushrooms are mostly water and designed to decompose quickly. Mold and bacteria grow RAPIDLY where it is wet, so you need to be able to get the shrooms dry in under 24 hours.

They won’t last long in the fridge either, so they need to be properly dried out.

This is why you MUST dehydrate them.

If you live in a hot dry climate, you can get a screen, grate, mesh or tray and put a fan on them for a day or two. Make sure they have space between each mushroom.

5b. Dry your magic Mushrooms

You know the mushroom is properly dehydrated when it is crisp and snaps in half.

You can also dry them in an oven, which is not too efficient, but it can work if you are tight on funds. Lay them out on a tray with enough space between each fruit and set the oven to the lowert setting.

Keep it below 175° F so the potency stays strong. I do not prefer this method because it requires more babysitting as you have to watch the mushies, it uses electricity (or gas if you have a gas oven) and it keeps the oven occupied, which sucks if you have roomates.

5b. Dry your magic Mushrooms 2

The BEST way to dry mushrooms is to invest in a cheap dehydrator, which you might as well do if you plan on growing more magic mushrooms.

5b. Dry your magic Mushrooms 3

Simply organize your shrooms on the tray of the dehydrator, set to 140 or below, and run the dehydrator overnight. This is the fast, surefire way to dry mushrooms with as little hassle as possible.

Once your shooms are dry enough to snap clean in half, it’s time to think about long term magic mushroom storage.

5c. Store your magic mushrooms

The container you use to store your dried psilocybin mushrooms should be airtight.

Get a glass jar with an airtight seal. Store them in the cupboard, in the dark. You can use a few desiccant packets (silica packets) in the bottom, and they will stay potent for several years. Stock up for the Zombie Apocalypse.

5d. Prepare for next flush

If you want to try for a second flush to maximize yields from your first successful attempt to Grow Mushrooms DIRECTLY in a Ready Rice Bag, here is what you should do:

By now the substrate in the bag is probably dry AF. Mushrooms are like nearly all water, so they sucked the water right out of it.

So…

Simply fill the bags up with water until the substrate floats. Be careful not to fill past the vent holes. Use the paperclips to lightly close the bag tops and create a humid environment inside the bag. Cover again with your ziplock bags.

Let the water sit in the bags for a few hours.

Dump the water out and they return the bag to fruiting conditions. Keep the temps between 69° and 74° F and mist once or twice a day. Send happy vibes to the mushroom gods and get ready to see new pins in a few days.

Fruiting magic mushrooms directly from the bag FAQs

  1. Is possible to fruit from the bag without coir or anything else?

Coir is pretty much required, as it insures success and provides the optimal fruiting conditions.
The coir keeps the casing, or top layer moist and wet, so yet, it is necessary. Fruiting psilocybin mushrooms directly from a ready rice bag, however, takes just a handful of coco coir for each bag.
If you choose not to use coco coir in your direct bag grow, you may get one or two mushrooms, but your yield will be drastically reduced and it may take very long. Just not worth in, IMO.

  2. How long does it take to fruit magic mushrooms directly from the bag?

It takes a few weeks to a month after inoculation for the rice to get fully inoculated, but at the right temperature it’s usually just a few weeks.
After the bag is fully inoculated it takes another week for mushrooms to fruit from the rice bag.
So, with proper temperatures and humidity, aka good fruiting conditions, you are looking at about 3 weeks before you have magic mushrooms ready.

  3. Can you rehydrate after harvest for a second flush if you are fruiting mushrooms directly from the 90 Second Rice Bags?

    YES!!
Once you harvest the FIRST FLUSH, simply fill the bags up with water to the vent holes.
Let the water sit in the bags for a few hours.

Dump the water out and they return the bag to fruiting conditions.
Use the paperclips to lightly close the bag tops and create a humid environment inside the bag and cover again with your ziplock bags.

Keep the temps between 69° and 74° F and mist once or twice a day. Send happy vibes to the mushroom gods and get ready to see new pins and a second flush directly inside your 90 second rice bag in a few days.

Did you enjoy learning to Grow Mushrooms in a Bag? If you want to have a larger yield, consider trying the Uncle Ben’s Tek spawning to bulk which yields more mushrooms than growing mushrooms in rice alone.

It is similar to growing mushrooms DIRECTLY in a Ready Rice Bag, except you take the inoculated rice and mix in with a substrate in a clear plastic bin. It is more involved, but also gives you more mushrooms. Check out our concise shopping list for Uncle Ben’s Tek spawning to BULK.

  4. Lorna VanderZanden

Step 4c says to cut corners off ZipLoc and place over coir-topped rice bag.
    Step 4d provides temp.
Step 4e says to micromist… do I take the ZipLoc bags to mist, or do I mist over the outside of the ZipLocs? The clipped ZipLoc corners don’t seem to let in much micromist. Help?

    1. Hi Lorna,
Yes, you remove the ziploc bags to micromist the substrate. After you mist the substrate, use a paperclip in the top center to hold the sides of the bag together. Then replace the ziploc bag. You will not be able to seal the ziploc bag, the ziploc bag simply covers the top half of the rice bag to create the right environment. The ziploc bag keeps the environment humid, which the substrate needs at this point.

      Love and light,
      Katie Lyn

      1. also, keep in mind, when you snip off the corners of the ziploc bag, that you only want to snip just a small bit of the corner for fresh air exchcange. The hole should be really just a 3 or 4 millimeters in diameter.

  5. Hi Katie!

I am a first time grower and have spent a lot of time researching different methods. Yours seems to be the easiest by far (and almost too good to be true!) I would really really appreciate if you could answer the following questions for me. You seem to know what you’re talking about!

1.Have you had more success with this method over others?
2.Does this method produce an end product at a rate that is markedly slower or faster than the more involved methods?
    3. Should I heat the needle in between each bag injection?
    4. At what points, if any, should the bags be exposed to light?
(In my intended growing room there are two windows that let in a considerable amount of light, but the shades can be drawn)
    5. Would it be beneficial to keep a humidifier going during the process or will it increase the risk of growing harmful bacteria?

Thank you for all your help. Mushrooms have greatly improved my mental and emotional wellbeing. I am very excited to finally be involved in the cycle from growth to consumption and look forward to sharing the fruits of my labor and the joy of mushrooms with those I love!

Much love to you and well wishes on your journey,

    Scotlyn

    1. Hi Scotlyn,
      Thanks for writing!
I have used both the bag and the Uncle bens tek using plastic bins and honestly I prefer the bins as the yeild is higher. The bag method uses less materials, and that is the biggest benefit, its simplicity.

The bag method was slower IIRC. The method is not mine, I learned it on reddit. The reason I write about them is because when I was growing, there was no condensed shopping list, which is why I created this and the uncle bens tek shopping list article.

I personally heat the needle every time, you cant be too safe and I want to avoid contam.

I would not use a humidifier, I would just mist them.

      Best to you!
      Katie Lyn

    1. The zip lock bags should have the corners . Honestly, this is a fun grow, but the tubs are more fruitful than growing in the bag. But I keep this article up because some ppl want to give it a go.
